Your Journey to Becoming an Aeromedical Evacuation Technician

From enlistment to mission-ready — here's what to expect.

Becoming an Aeromedical Evacuation Technician is a rewarding and rigorous journey. From your first day in uniform to your first flight caring for patients in the air, the process takes approximately 18–24 months. Here’s what your path will look like:

  • Step 1: Basic Military Training (BMT)

    Duration: 7.5 weeks

Required only for individuals with no prior military service

You'll learn military customs, discipline, fitness, and the foundational skills to become an Airman in the United States Air Force.

  • Step 2: Tech School – Aerospace Medical Service Apprentice Course

Duration: 14 weeks – Fort Sam Houston, TX
Here, you’ll begin your formal medical training, including:

    Hands-on clinical skills

    Patient care fundamentals

    National Registry EMT Certification

By the end, you’ll be qualified as an Aerospace Medical Technician (4N0X1).

  • Step 3: Flight School – Aeromedical Evacuation Technician Course

    Duration: 8 weeks

This is where your training takes flight! You’ll learn:

In-flight medical care and AE-specific clinical procedures
    Aircraft configuration and emergency protocols
    Hands-on simulation and on-aircraft training

You'll train on the same aircraft used during real-world evacuation missions: C-130, C-17, and KC-135.

  • Step 4: SERE – Survival, Evasion, Resistance, Escape

    Duration: 2 weeks

    Training for worst-case scenarios

You'll learn how to survive in austere environments, evade capture, resist exploitation, and return with honor in the event of isolation during a mission.

  • Step 5: MQT – Mission Qualification Training

    Duration: Approx. 4 months

This is your final phase before becoming fully mission-ready. During MQT, you’ll be integrated with the 349th Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron, flying missions and applying your skills under the mentorship of experienced crew members.

  • 🎯 End Goal: Certified, Confident, and Mission-Ready

By the end of your journey, you'll be a certified Aeromedical Evacuation Technician, capable of delivering lifesaving care at 30,000 feet.
